Many numerological and religious explanations of the composition of a deck of cards have been put forth, one of them being that the four suits represent the four elements. Particularly for playing cards such as Tarot, the four suits take on the qualities of the Astrological four elements. The earliest known suits are the Latin suits and then they evolved across cultures and time.
